Octopus Energy's referral scheme pays £50 in bill credit to both sides of a switch, and for most people it just works: get a quote through the link, let Octopus handle the switch, wait about two weeks, done. But if you're here because your credit hasn't shown up, it's almost always one of three things — and none of them mean the money is gone for good.
The credit appears on your Octopus account shortly after your supply officially goes live with them — not on the day you sign up, and not on the day you accept the quote. The switch itself takes around two weeks from start to finish, and the credit typically follows within a few days of go-live. So if it's been under three weeks since you switched, you're probably not missing anything — you're just early.
This is the single most common reason a referral credit never arrives: switching through a price comparison site — Uswitch, MoneySuperMarket and similar — routes you through the comparison site's own commercial deal with Octopus, not through your friend's personal referral link. The two can't be combined. If you found Octopus via a comparison site rather than by clicking a referral link directly, the referral credit was never going to trigger, no matter how long you wait. The fix for next time is simple: always start from the referral link itself, not a search result or a comparison listing.
The £50 is for switching a new account to Octopus. If you've had an Octopus Energy account before — even one you closed some time ago — reopening it through a referral link generally won't qualify as a new switch. Same household, different name on the account, is also often treated as connected rather than genuinely new. If you're unsure whether your address has an Octopus history, that's worth checking before you assume the credit has simply gone missing.
Occasionally the delay sits with the supplier you're leaving, not with Octopus — a slow final meter reading or a contested exit fee can push the official switch-complete date back, which pushes the credit back with it. If your online account still shows the switch as "in progress" rather than live, that's the credit's real trigger point, and it hasn't fired yet.
None of this is exotic — it's the same handful of reasons behind almost every "where's my referral credit" question for this scheme. Start from the link, switch as a genuinely new customer, and give it the full two-to-three-week window before you worry.
